Sustainable olive oil production: Save the Good Oil

The poor quality of our food is one of the great world problems that the United Nations is trying to solve. In this sense, both producers and consumers are increasingly concerned with the sustainability and ecology of the products they produce and consume, which translates into betting on sustainable processes and products.

The Deoleo group has joined the change with the “Save Good Oil” initiative, a campaign that seeks to support the traditional Spanish olive farming sector. The sustainable olive oil production project “Salvemos el Buen Aceite” collaborates with more than 96,000 families of farmers who meet the necessary requirements to achieve environmental sustainability.

Let’s save the Good Oil: the objective

The cultures of traditional Spanish olive groves are now in danger because of the progress and expansion of mechanized or industrialized crops while they may improve profitability in the sector, helping to preserve traditional and sustainable production. If we add to this the decrease in demand in some of the main oil consuming countries, all this has contributed to promoting the Deoleo group’s “Save Good Oil” campaign .

This campaign seeks to support the traditional olive sector by granting sustainability certificates to their products, so that they can make a difference. This initiative has been implemented in Spain through Carbonell . Thanks to this certification, granted by Intertek, it is guaranteed that the products comply with the pillars and basic criteria of sustainability, seen from a social, economic, environmental and quality perspective.

Sustainable production: certification pillars

Salvemos el Buen Aceite wants to attract consumers by adding value to sustainably produced products and guaranteeing the olive grower’s net income. To do this, Intertek grants certifications that include the following certification criteria or pillars:

  • Economic sustainability: with the aim of supporting traditional farmers by optimizing the use of fertilizers, phytosanitary products and water and betting on energy savings in each farm.
  • Social sustainability: in order to increase employment in rural areas. In this sense, Deoleo already works with 96,000 families of olive groves and cooperatives in the sector in order to improve the situation of one of the sectors most affected by depopulation: rural areas.
  • Environmental sustainability: this pillar is intended to conserve the biodiversity in olive groves by promoting practices such as plowing between trees.
  • Sustainable in terms of quality: obtaining unique flavors, always betting on native olive varieties. With the sustainable production and early harvest of the olives, the aromas and properties of this food are better preserved, which results in a high quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil with excellent antioxidant properties, which help maintain good health. .

Here you can find out more about what is environmental and social sustainability .

The sum of all these pillars guarantees the sustainable quality of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), a final product characterized by its different flavors, depending on the autochthonous varieties of each olive grove.

Vision, mission and values

The Deoleo group with the Save the Good Oil initiative aims to be the engine that contributes to change in the traditional olive growing sector. In this way, it directs its mission to inspire and guide both producers and consumers towards sustainability , both in the production of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), and in its consumption. This mission is based on the group’s vision, with the desire that the world promote, develop and live in a more sustainable way, as well as its values based on facilitating knowledge, exchange and involvement of the sector, developing opportunities in the oil market in the long term and commit to guaranteeing maximum quality in order to contribute to a healthier diet of consumers.

The sustainable production campaign Save the Good Oil is framed within the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, through the Deoleo Sustainability Protocol.
