James Lovelock, an independent scientist who created the Gaia hypothesis , a hypothesis that considers the planet as a self-regulating system, assures that the effects of climate change can be catastrophic for humanity, but not for the Earth that, sooner or later, will recover. Why James Lovelock is a pessimistic scientist
For the scientist, global warming is a reality with solid scientific evidence. And sometimes we are optimistic. For example, sea level rises much faster than studies predicted. Regarding the temperature, it can increase globally up to 5 degrees , but it is not sure when it will happen: it can be in a few years or in more than a century. But, in any case, Lovelock warns: if millions of tons of harmful gases are emitted into the atmosphere, as will be done, unless things change a lot, in ten or twenty years, the consequences cannot be avoided.
Lovelock’s pessimism is such that, in his opinion, the first thing man has to think about is “trying to survive”, like other animal species, integrating ourselves into Gaia. He also thinks that we should stop blaming the businessmen for the industrial revolution, since they did not want to destroy the Earth, they just wanted to make more money. In addition, for this controversial scientist, wind and solar energy are a scam. In certain cases, for example in Germany, more carbon dioxide is produced than with conventional energies. In his opinion, large devices that absorb CO2 may be an option, although they would not completely solve the problem.
How to integrate with the planet? Lovelock doesn’t know. But, somehow, it will happen … or we will become extinct.
